- Double-weighted statement
- This book is the culmination of the author’s major programme of research conducted from 1998-2018. The size and scope of the research, in terms of material covered and its exposition, is equivalent to at least 9 articles/chapters. It constitutes the first distinct conceptual contribution to understanding the intersection between twentieth-century documentary photography and writing, synthesizing multidisciplinary insights with extensive original empirical research. The research was conducted in archives in the United States over more than 20 years and was complemented by funding from the AHRC, The Institute of American Studies, The British Association of American Studies, and the Terra Foundation.
