- This monograph represents sustained research which uses rich empirical data from 3 universities in an exploration that draws out and delineates the complex interrelationships between global, national and institutional structures and processes, in a critical realist approach to the nature of knowledge, human agency and structure-agency interactions. This is made ‘real’ in the context of lecturers’ professional lives in higher education, in a work of intellectual creativity and critical insight. Empirical research is thus used in conjunction with a deep understanding of the conceptual and philosophical approaches used here, to produce a work of intellectual depth and complexity.
