- This monograph demonstrates sustained research effort over a period of years, generating an extended, complex piece of research. It has involved the collection and analysis of a complex set of primary sources, literary, material, visual and epigraphic, coupled with a creative investigation undertaken from a variety of disciplinary perspectives (ancient history, contemporary social science, cognitive approaches including psychology and neuroscience), and in relation to different contexts (social, political, legal, religious). It presents innovative and critical insights into both a specific sequence of historical events, and the broader arena of the study of ancient emotions.
