- Research for this book necessitated a degree of mastery of Spanish, German, and, to a lesser extent, Hebrew, in order to read excavation reports. It also involved a considerable amount of time conducting archival research in the Sackler Library, Oxford, consulting the foreign-language journals in which reports are published, as well as secondary foreign-language and English sources not held in Bristol. This was supplemented by time in the libraries of Stanford University, Brown University, and the BIAA Ankara, which hold complementary specialist journals and secondary publications.
