- This paper proposes a novel method to systematically determine the symmetries of difference equations along with methods and algorithms for solving functional equations. Its key contributions are to introduce a new theory applicable to a wide class of equations avoiding all the restrictions and limitations of previous approaches and to be easily implemented in symbolic computations. This paper formed the basis for a new collaboration with the School of Mines, Colorado, USA, in terms of a joint project for the implementation of the algorithms in Mathematica.
