- This book is the result of a sustained research effort over several years. Adams investigated Read’s extensive personal papers held at the University of Victoria over two one-year periods the latter of which necessitated successfully applying for the Banting Fellowship at Victoria University. Further funding (AHRC) had to be secured to enable research at the US Library of Congress to examine the Paul Avrich Collection. Over 60 pamphlets and periodicals were utilised. Further archival work was undertaken over two years at the John Rylands Library, Manchester, the Brotherton Library in Leeds and the Salford Working Class Library.
