- The book draws on documentary analysis of public sources and interviews with penal voluntary sector practitioners. It adopts a long temporal view, considering the legacy of philanthropic action alongside neoliberal policy reforms. It utilises a novel methodological approach, applying actor-network theory from science and technology studies to punishment, and developing policy-centric accounts to illustrate how voluntary organisations can mediate punishment at the micro and macro levels. The lengthy period of research and writing up time encapsulated in this text facilitated these contributions, which were recognised as it was the sole winner of the 2017 British Society of Criminology Book Prize.
