- This monograph of 85,000 words is based on over a decade of research and offers the first detailed analysis of the impact of public opinion on diplomacy during the twentieth century. The research involved both engagement with debates about the concept of public opinion and the intersection between the ‘public’ and ‘high’ policymaking, and the development of five case studies with extensive geographical and temporal reach. These distinct case studies involved the collection and analysis of a diverse range of sources, both primary and secondary, to showcase the benefits of taking public opinion more seriously as a category of analysis.
