- Dawson was responsible, with three co-editors, for conceiving and editing this substantial edited volume (pp. viii + 385). This included writing a 13,000-word chapter (# 4), and co-writing (50% with Jonathan R. Topham) a 12,000 word introduction and a 10,000 word chapter (# 1) surveying the historical terrain of the volume. The collection stemmed from a workshop held as part of the AHRC-funded project, Constructing Scientific Communities: Citizen Science in the 19th and 21st Centuries, for which Dawson was Co-Investigator. Along with the project's Principal Investigator, Sally Shuttleworth of Oxford University, Dawson developed the core concept and critical framework for the workshop, and chose the participants invited and then selected for inclusion in the volume. Dawson and Shuttleworth were then joined by the project's advisors, Bernard Lightman and Topham, and together they decided the structure of the volume and carried out all editorial work, working with five further contributors. Although the collection has four co-editors, who are ordered alphabetically on the title page, Dawson and Topham made the greatest contribution to the writing of the volume, while Dawson, along with Shuttleworth, conceived, originated and developed the project before the subsequent involvement of the other two editors.
