- This multi-institution research (SHU, Nottingham, RAL-ISIS) provided new insight into the roles of alkali and alkaline earth cations for stabilising sulphate-anions in glasses, relevant to glass science and radioactive waste immobilisation, helping enable enhanced waste loading in radioactive waste glasses. The work used 2 successful RAL-ISIS neutron beam time awards (RB1320055 and RB1520032) and helped support a successful EPSRC proposal (EP/T016337/1, £863k) in radioactive waste glass structure. It was instrumental in gaining affiliate membership of the EPSRC TRANSCEND consortium (EP/S01019X/1), leading to a successful Nuclear Decommissioning Authority PhD bursary proposal (£103k) for SHU in radioactive waste glass development.
