- This work, supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant 41501429), Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions program (Grant 164320H116), the University Natural Science Project of Jiangsu Province (Grant 16KJA170001), derives a new methodology to determine the quantity and location of rain gauges by using remote sensed data, principle component analysis and cluster analysis. The work led to further funding via National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC, grant no. 41871299) and Natural Environment Research Council (NERC, grant NE/N012143/1). The methodology has also been used in the application of soil moisture sensor networks (10.5194/hess-24-2577-2020).
