- The monograph constitutes a significant piece of work with considerable intellectual scope. It provides an innovative approach to understanding attitudes to European integration and the EU. It provides a rigorous analysis of existing survey data. Reflecting considerable academic investment, it presents novel experimental data from 18 member states. Matthew Gabel, Professor of Political Science, Washington University St Louis commented: '['] Catherine De Vries develops a creative, original and insightful explanation for how the national context shapes Euroscepticism. The empirical analyses are superb both in characterizing public opinion and in the messy business of untangling what causes what.'
