- No facility can currently provide the range of ions and energies necessary to fully explore radiobiological applications. This paper presents an innovative new facility designed using BDSIM within an interdisciplinary consortium. High-intensity laser-driven generation, combined with plasma-lens focussing of ions and fixed-field alternating-gradient acceleration promises a uniquely flexible research environment. The development of faster proton and ion-beam therapy ultimately improves the targeting of tumours. By rapid switching between ion type and energies this facility will explore the therapeutic benefits of the FLASH effect. The technology has tremendous potential for societal impact by creating a paradigm shifting method of cancer treatment.
