- This paper has three unique features: 1) it defines a framework for reporting the sustainability of High Speed Railways (HSRs), including validating it with the world railway body (UIC); 2) it develops KPIs for 26 selected factors and; 3) benchmarks the world’s major HSRs against the framework. No previous research covered HSRs across all three sustainability pillars. The paper demonstrates that current reporting varies greatly, therefore little meaningful benchmarking is possible. With UIC interest aroused this framework has the potential to become the foundation for future world standards for reporting by HSRs, enhancing sustainability and promoting benchmarking to improve performance.
