- This special issue was edited by the author with Sybille Frank. Two aspects are joined for one output here, the “Introduction” by the editors and Dr Ashley’s sole-authored contribution. The Special Issue was ground-breaking in gathering international academics on this topic. It offered insights into the nature and importance of heritage and identities from the perspectives of those ‘outside’ the ‘authorised’ realm of heritage discourse. Important to the editors were the power relations that constitute the shifting and contested assumptions of difference used to define ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ positionality.
The Ashley sole-authored article was based on research funded by AHRC Cultural Value Project 2013-2014 and involved collaboration with Chattri Indian Memorial group in Brighton. The research formed the basis of research on cultural value and heritage which led to a 2017-2019 (Multi)Cultural Heritage AHRC Leadership Fellowship.
This project attracted the attention of the Royal Society for Arts and invitation to the author as Fellow for her specialty in Heritage and minority ethnic groups, and speaking engagements such as University of Westminster 2019.
