- This paper presents the development of a novel sensor-less position detection technique that overcomes the difficulties of position detection at zero and very low speed for permanent magnet AC motors. The proposed new control technique is implemented to the control of PM traction motors and the test was carried out at a site in Blackpool with a full size Tram vehicle and confirmed a substantial improvement in both energy efficiency and dynamic response of the integrated traction and steering systems. The collaborating company (Store Energy Technology) has taken the work further to build demonstration vehicles for commercial exploration.
