- This 280-page book provides the first account of the structures and networks that made possible the Church of England’s expansion in Britain’s settler empire to 1860. The far-reaching analysis, which encompasses both the metropolitan British and colonial contexts, and considers the Church’s varied roles in empire, was the product of a four-year doctorate and a one-year early career fellowship. To tell the story of the great range of individuals and institutions that powered Church extension, it was necessary to bring together hundreds of manuscript and printed documents, sourced from twenty-eight archives in Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Canada and Australia.
