- This monograph is the first and only study to investigate Nobel Prize winner Chinese-French playwright Gao Xingjian’s theatrical work in relation to postdramatic theatre and comparing it with those of Western contemporary playwrights, such as Martin Crimp. It proposes a new term of reference, postdramatic transnationalism, defined as a transnational artistic and theatrical trend that also accounts for the work and influences of non-Western theatrical traditions. It engages into an extensive close critical analysis of contemporary theatrical texts and practices that can facilitate a better understanding of Gao’s complex plays, often overlooked by Anglo-American theatre.
