- This volume was conceived and co-edited by Bale and Sobecki together. Bale led on writing the Introduction. All texts (apart from Saewulf and Libelle) were re-edited from primary sources, some of them proving to be more arduous than others (Torkington, Kay, Floris are very long, and Robert of Gloucester was particularly challenging to edit). Bale and Sobecki each edited and drafted individual parts (detailed below) and then we each read, edited, and corrected each others' contributions; glosses, punctuation, etc. had to be regularised by each of us across the volume and copy-editing was equally split. Bale’s authorial and editorial contribution to individual chapters was: ‘Places, Real and Imagined’ 100% authored by Bale; Robert of Gloucester, 100% edited by Bale; Mandeville’s Prologue, 100% edited by Bale; Mandeville in India, 100% edited by Bale; St Bridget in the Holy Land, 100% edited by Bale; Floris, 100% edited by Bale; The Stacions of Rome, 100% edited by Bale; Margery Kempe, 100% edited by Bale; Wey’s will, 100% edited by Bale; English pilgrims at Rome, 100% edited by Bale; travellers’ itineraries, 100% edited by Bale; Kay, Siege of Rhodes, 100% edited by Bale; Capitulation of Granada; 100% edited by Bale; Walsingham Ballad, 100% edited by Bale; Torkington, Diaries, 100% edited by Bale. Bale and Sobecki each did 50% of the editing of the final section on sources.
