- Bio-renewable glycerol currently has the largest share of the emerging bio-economy, being available in huge quantities as a by-product of bio-fuel production with a projected market estimated to be worth > 3.5 billion US$ by 2024. This paper describes the application of our dehydrative etherification methodology to the high yielding synthesis of glyceryl ethers from glycerol employing non-toxic alcohol substrates as alkylating agents. This is work is significant as glycerol, is a key platform chemical for further elaboration into commercially valuable consumer products, industrial solvents, protective coatings and bio-fuel derivatives for improving engine performance.
