- This work is part of an international collaboration with Harbin Institute of Technology (China) and includes key outcomes from a doctoral studentship completed by co-author Dr Y. Yao funded by the Northwest Composites Centre (UK). Insight into the origins of auxetic behaviour in a natural molecular-level polymer, reported in this work, is being developed further in a follow-on VC doctoral scholarship, co-funded by Michelin (France). This includes applying a conceptual model from this work in detailed analytical and finite element models to identify auxetic mechanisms in the first synthetic auxetic liquid crystal elastomer reported by Leeds University in December 2018.
