- This monograph is the culmination of five years of investigation, with extensive archival research in INA (Paris) on anthropological films from the 1940s and 50s. Working through texts and films, the book elaborates a concept of étrangement which dismantles the ethnocentric discourse of Western travellers. Going beyond a postcolonial approach, l’étrangement thus offers a new way of understanding the Other. The detailed analyses and resulting theoretical model explore how the relation of travellers and hosts has been and is constantly renegotiated; no longer according to the rules of resemblance and difference, but according to those of strangeness itself.
