- Crime in England, 1815-1880: Experiencing the criminal justice system draws upon an extensive body of archival research to explore crime and criminal justice in the nineteenth century. It utilises a wide range of archival sources (newspapers, parliamentary papers, national and local policing, criminal justice and punishment administrative records) to examine attitudes towards crime and offending and transitions in criminal justice practice. It also illuminates the lives and experiences of those who came into contact with the criminal justice system and in doing so, uses detailed individual case studies, using ‘whole life’ history methodology, to reconstruct offending and prison histories.
