- This volume emanated from a conference organized by the international research network ‘Translations in Transnational Contexts’ established by Dr Graciela Iglesias-Rogers and Dr David Hook at the University of Oxford in 2013 and expanded to the University of Winchester a year later, with a membership of over fifty scholars in four continents engaged in a wide variety of disciplines such as History, Law, Classics, English, Modern Languages, Arts, Philosophy, Sociology, Medicine and Anthropology, among others. Dr Iglesias-Rogers organized the event which bore in part the title of the book (‘Roots of restlessness?: Translations in Times of Disruption’, University of Oxford, May 2014). The exchange of experiences and views that took place on that day was then expanded through a process of placing each of the 12 chapters (covering from the Danish Conquest of England in 1016 to the early twenty-first century) to five-rounds of peer-reviewing which involved the intervention of scholars from different disciplines, including members of the network who had not been conference participants. Dr Graciela Iglesias-Rogers was in charge of this exercise, one that entailed a great deal of humility, patience and good humour, particularly on the part of the authors who for the most part found themselves in the strange of position of having to explain approaches and concepts considered self-evident in their own fields. Dr Graciela Iglesias-Rogers made sure that the volume could transcend disciplinary barriers and also offer material and insights of interest to specialists and non-experts alike. In addition to being the author of one of the chapters and co-author of the Introduction, she also acted as the main person of contact for the publishers (Palgrave) and the rest of the authors.
