- ORIGINALITY: Presents the first algorithm for finding kidney exchanges that are optimal relative to the specific, unique objectives of the UK Living Kidney Sharing Scheme (UKLKSS). SIGNIFICANCE: The implemented algorithm has been used by NHS Blood and Transplant (contact: Assistant Director, Statistics and Clinical Studies) within UKLKSS since 2012. Solutions identified by this algorithm have directly led to 1096 kidney transplants to date. RIGOUR: Model is described mathematically and extensive testing was undertaken to establish implementation correctness. Preliminary version of paper accepted to Symposium on Experimental Algorithms 2012; one of 6 from 64 submissions invited to this special journal issue.
