- Euhpony is a feature film written and directed by Indian-British director, Sunny Seth, screened in 2020. In the narrative, Italian actress, Beatrice Grannò’s character, Olivia, slowly emerges from the most severe form of PTSD and agoraphobia. The music score critically develops the relationship between music and narrative. Non-diegetic music where the source is not visible on-screen, is the most commonly used type of film music. Diegetic music is used less frequently, but is typically integrated within the narrative space of the film with the source of the music tangibly visible, be it a gramophone or a performance. Internal diegetic music, however, is where the music is imagined in the mind of a character and its use in film music is rare. When it has been used, it has been restricted to short, occasional scenes. The novel use of diegetic music in a sustained narrative form is central to the research component of Euphony: as the representation of Olivia’s condition demands that she can only effectively express herself through her piano playing, all of the music exists in Olivia’s imagination and it is this novel conceptualisation of sustained internal music that the audience is hearing. Thus the music for Euphony demanded a novel research process closely integrated to Olivia’s changing mental states. The work aims first to develop the degree to which diegetic music can be used to increase human connectivity and sensory reality with film, and second to apply internal diegesis to change the role of music thereby enhancing the audiences’ emotional engagement. The output comprises an album of music published in 2020 by Music Haven, indicative video clips from the film Euphony, and a portfolio of additional information outlining the research process.
