- Flash sintering of ceramics can reduce the carbon footprint of the ceramics industry. Previously, only small samples with irregular shape could be produced. We have demonstrated a new processing route, Flash-Spark Plasma Sintering (F-SPS), that enables large, dense ceramics to be densified in just tens of seconds and uses less than 20% of the energy normally required. Besides the reduction in time, energy costs and the possibility of automation, the processing is producing materials with new and unique properties. Key outcome of the EPSRC programme grant (EP/K008749/2).
