- The work is a collaboration betweenSHU, the National Centre for Advanced Tribology at Southampton (nCATS) (Prof. Wood), Rolls Royce plc. and the National Physical Laboratory. It exploits findings from EU project Innovatial (€12.5M, Integrated project with 25 partners NMP3- CT 2005-515844) and EPSRC grant "Fundamentals of HIPIMS Technology" (EP/D049202/1). Led by Professors Ehiasarian and Hovsepian it introduces a new concept for nanoscale multilayer coatings with graded stress to combat erosion of jet turbine and helicopter blades. It creates a new platform for research with Rolls Royce resulting in patent application EP3527688A1.
