- This article considers the role of decorum in the design of two of Giuliano da Sangallo’s most well-known buildings, the pilgrimage church of S. Maria delle Carceri (1485) in Prato and the sacristy of S. Spirito (1489) in Florence itself. It goes beyond the normal approach of merely identifying the ancient sources used by architects to consider how Sangallo manipulated them for artistic and iconographic purposes, while at the same time subjecting them to a sense of appropriateness.
