- Understanding and controlling the disconnection of the leading vortex ring from the trailing jet is important in many engineering and medical applications. This process depends on the formation number (piston stroke ratio (L/D) of a vortex generator) and formation time (the time necessary for the vortex generator to inject the same amount of circulation as carried by the detached vortex ring). This paper is significant because it demonstrates the most advanced approach to estimate these numbers, accounting for the effects of viscosity, confinement and elliptical shape of the vortex core. This research is a key outcome of EPSRC project EP/M002608/1.
