- This international university-industrial collaboration (partner LLP Qazaqmys Corp, Kazakhstan) developed a new process for bacterial heap leaching of copper and silver from a low-grade copper-ore from the site Northern Qarashoshaq (Zhylandy, Kazakhstan), which is in early-stage commercial development. The research compared the novel biotechnological and chemical extraction approaches, demonstrating the bacterial leaching as a greener technology. In the field the acidophilic bacteria appeared naturally during sulfuric acid leaching and the cultures were deposited in the RSE Republican Collection of Microorganisms, http://rcm.kz/. Our research will enable Qazaqmys to pilot increasing extraction levels during warm periods (May-September) when bacterial activity is highest.
