- This is a translation and study of the erotic (shunga) parody of the famous women’s conduct book, Onna daigaku takara-bako (A Treasure Box of Learning for Women, 1716). Gerstle translated the text, added notes and wrote an essay on the significance of this book for understanding views on sexuality and women’s education, arguing that this parody and others constituted a counter discourse to the Confucian women’s conduct books. Monta HAYAKAWA transcribed the original cursive script, and Aki ISHIGAMI contributed an essay on ‘medical’ aspects of the book. The book is laid out to contrast the parody and the original.
