- Double-weighted statement
- It is a work of considerable length (over 150,000 words; over 80 illustrations), requiring years of sustained research to collect and analyse a large body of materials from a wide variety of disciplines, such as archaeology, ancient history, modern literature (in many European languages), visual arts (e.g. paintings, sculpture), performing arts (e.g. music, theatre, ballet, cinema, television); modern architecture; and fashion. Some primary sources were difficult to access, e.g. obtaining interviews with famous writers (Don DeLillo) and musicians (Sir Harrison Birtwistle); research also involved work in archives abroad (Royal Theatre in Stockholm) and with artists based abroad (Panagiotakis).
