- This was the fruit of 5 years’ research. It utilises unpublished, archival sources and printed primary sources of the civil war era, particularly pamphlets and newspapers. The volume reassesses and offers a fresh perspective on all the national campaigns and major battles of the English civil war and re-examines the nature of that war, stressing the centrality of the ‘county war’ and the need to evaluate the conflict at county and regional levels – new analysis of which forms a significant part of the volume – in order to understand the nature, course and outcome of the civil war
