- Creating the Opium War is a major research monograph (over 90,000 words) which is based almost entirely on original research. It makes the first attempt to bring together the political history of Sino-western relations and the cultural studies of British representations of China, as a new way of connecting the 'top-down' international history and 'bottom-up' global history. The book examines a wealth of primary materials, including parliamentary debates, travel accounts, newspapers published in both Britain and China, etc. The research time involved was equivalent to far more than two journal articles.
