- This novel research conducted in 2015 is the first to study community exposure to the plasticizer bisphenol-A via wastewater fingerprinting. The research was funded by the Leverhulme Trust (RPG-2013-297), EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account (EP/K503897/1) and Wessex Water (Ruth Barden, ruthbarden@wessexwater.co.uk). Similar approaches to monitor chemical exposure and public health have been adopted internationally (including monitoring COVID-19 prevalence at the community level). The work has led to further research funding by collaborating researchers at the University of Bath from the Global Challenges Research Fund (EPSRC, EP/P028403/1, 2017-2020) to develop a public health early warning system through water profiling.
