- This 330 page book explores the social and cultural contexts in which professional women sculptors were working between 1885 and 1950. Over an eight-year period, 2012 – 2020, Rose sought to trace the histories of as many of these women as possible, about which little was known. Drawing primarily on primary sources, the research involved extensive sourcing of historical material from the C19th/early C20th, held in both UK and US libraries. The book explores art school training, exhibiting opportunities and the writings of influential critics, and covers diverse sculptural genres ranging from the decorative to war memorials and ecclesiastical works.
