- This paper is the result of a partly EPSRC-funded collaboration between University of Liverpool (EP/H500146/1), Ulster University (EP/I02249X/1) and Centre for Laser Based Production Processes (EP/K030884) combining UK-leading expertise in nano-layer coating and biomedical implants. We have demonstrated a new platform for coating advanced titanium orthopaedic implants with a silver nanolayer using atomic layer deposition. The results have made a major contribution to inhibit biofilm formation (p < 0.001) of S. epidermidis on silver-coated implants (DOI: 10.1002/adhm.201700033). The work has been adopted by Stryker USA (Professor Chris Sutcliffe C.Sutcliffe@liverpool.ac.uk) to improve implant performance, primarily by inhibiting biofilm formation.
