- This substantial (310pp.) volume comprises the third (and last) of Cage’s most important formative exchanges of letters, with the Los Angeles-based critic and concert promoter, Peter Yates. It includes the complete extant correspondence, some 115 letters drawn from the John Cage Collection (Northwestern University) and the Peter Yates Papers (University of California at San Diego), alongside thirty-four selections from Yates’s critical writings (especially from Arts & Architecture), including a number previously unpublished. These are prefaced by a detailed critical introduction (25pp.) and accompanied by 400+ footnotes, which identify and contextualise practically every individual mentioned in the exchange.
