- Double-weighted statement
- Double-weighted based on extent of research, dual focus, originality, significance. This is the first monograph to examine the DC Vertigo imprint, which changed the face of mainstream American comics, and the first to combine Gothic critical theory and comics studies. It contains extensive primary research: complementing textual analysis with quantitative data taken from interviews and surveys of readers and convention attendees. It synthesises scholarship from Gothic and comics studies, creating a dialogue and proposing a new formalist model for analyzing comics. This approach reveals multiple parallels between both fields, and encourages holistic interpretation of their themes, storytelling structures, and subcultures/audiences.
