- This article demonstrates that a known honeybee ‘colony activation’ signal, only ever previously observed by visual means, can be detected by the vibrations in the honeycomb. It has changed its agreed interpretation and promises a method to non-invasively sense a highly specific physiological status of the colony. The research was featured in numerous press articles (e.g. https://www.newscientist.com/article/2182947-old-honeybees-make-a-drumming-sound-to-get-young-slackers-working/ and https://www.bensbees.com.au/2019/01/04/dorso-ventral-abdominal-vibration/ https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-6295341/Young-honeybees-slack-encouraged-work-drumming-sound.html https://www.beekeeping.isgood.ca/behaviour/the-shaking-signal-aka-dvav-dorsal-ventral-abdominal-vibrations https://www.hampshirechronicle.co.uk/news/national/16994908.bees-alarm-clock-recorded-for-first-time-by-researchers/). It led to honeybee vibration monitoring being included in Work Package 2 (Beekeeping and Innovation) of the EU-funded ‘B-GOOD’ project (€8m) developing an EU-wide bee health and management data platform (https://b-good-project.eu/).
