- Research for this 477 pp. monograph began in January 2012, and took up almost all of Stanley’s research time over the seven years to publication in 2018. The project involved work in American as well as British libraries, and took up two periods of research leave. The book covers all continents, and the entire twentieth century. It proceeds by a series of 15 unconventional juxtapositions of case studies, each of which depends on some primary sources, as well as extensive secondary scholarship.
