- This book brings together years of research on Shakespeare and cultural materialism. Each of the first four chapters historicises, evaluates, and analyses over thirty-five years of work in cultural materialism and Shakespeare studies in general. The fifth and final chapter constitutes a sustained cultural materialist reading of Julius Caesar. Detailed references are made throughout to eighteen plays by Shakespeare as well as to contemporary politics, popular culture, and digital material such as video games, Twitter posts, and blogs. This work was made possible by numerous visits to the British Library and the National Library of Australia.
