- The major cardiac associations, such as the American Heart Association and the Heart Rhythm Society, recommend the reporting of abnormal electrocardiographic (ECG) U waves because they are associated with poor clinical outcome. However, until now it has not been possible to detect U waves in atrial fibrillation, the most common abnormal heart rhythm with over 33 million sufferers worldwide. This key paper describes and validates a novel ECG signal processing algorithm that addresses this unmet clinical need, allowing the detection of potential heart defects in people with this condition for the first time.
