- Using hitherto neglected or lost sources, including the 5,000 letters in the archive at Hatfield House, this monograph reconstructs the political worlds Lady Derby inhabited. It offers the first substantial account of a female politician operating in Victorian Britain. Based on an AHRC-funded PhD, it focuses on the political activities of Lady Mary Derby (1824-1900. This book recasts our understanding of mid-Victorian political culture by incorporating the politics of the home, letter-writing and social relations into a consideration of the politics of Parliament and Government.
