- The chapter focuses on theoretical and practical citizenship through civic participation in structures of self-government in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Arguing against the traditional idea that the Commonwealth’s attraction to non-Polish nations amounted to ‘Polonisation’, in a first section, it presents various characterisations of citizenship. The second part focuses on the rule of law over citizens, not subjects. The third section explores non-Polish and non-noble identities, particularly the constitutional and practical implications for Prussian nobles and burghers of the act of union with the Polish crown. The final section focuses on citizens’ loyalties and the various limitations of that citizenship.
