- The substantive item in this multi-component submission is a co-edited book on the French artist Charles-François Daubigny - the first to explore his importance for the subsequent generation of artists, particularly Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh. It accompanied a three-venue international exhibition at the Taft Museum, Cincinnati (20 Feb – 29 May 2016), the National Galleries of Scotland (25 June – 2 Oct 2016) and the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (21 Oct 2016 – 29 Jan 2017). Together with Lynne Ambrosini and Maite van Dijk, Fowle co-authored and edited the book (published in English and Dutch), and authored an essay titled ‘Auvers-sur-Oise as an Artists’ Colony: from Daubigny to Van Gogh’. This essay analysed Daubigny's impact on a younger generation of artists such as Cézanne, Pissarro and Van Gogh within a broader context of intersections between naturalism and French Impressionism, and explored the impact on artistic production of the art market and softer networks of influence in artist colonies outside Paris. Fowle was project leader for the exhibition and lead curator in Edinburgh. Please see front matter of catalogue, pp7-13, for details of the exhibition and pp170-173 for list of exhibited works.
