- K (2015) is a two-channel video installation by Elizabeth Price, presented on two screens with antithetical orientations–one screen oriented vertically, and one horizontally. The work is comprised of three different types of visual material: the photographic archive of the sun from the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, in Oxfordshire; footage of pop performances drawn from online videos; and specifically commissioned digital CGI animation of hosiery weaving and packaging. Through this amalgam, Price is able to highlight the overlooked cultural significance of some of the materials and objects that scientific institutions hold such as the sun archive at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, which was fully digitised for the first time thanks to Price’s research. At the same time, the multi-channel composition of the work’s visual material indicates that the critical currencies of photo-montage, identified with the literal cut, may be meaningfully diverted into other forms and aspects of composition in the digital realm. Price employs para-fiction to create associative connections between these elements, thus putting forward a distinct format of sharing knowledge and histories through a genre not traditionally associated with this function. Price developed K (2015) through archival research that, apart from Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, has included museums, corporate collections, public bodies and online video-sharing platforms. In addition, K (2015) was supported by a secondary literature review focusing, among others, on the science of the sun, histories and theories of montage and collage, choreomania, and the cultural history of circular weaving and hosiery production; research into digital processes and software applications; correspondence with archives, museums and experts in the thematic areas and digital processes featured in the work. K (2015) was first exhibited at the Untitled section of Art Basel 2015, in Switzerland, and has been presented in solo and group exhibitions in the US, Ireland, China, The Netherlands, Japan and UK.
