- Double-weighted statement
- This 400-page volume presents a major archival and field research project which was largely conducted solo by SJ, including production of the drawings around which it is articulated. Most of his research focus effort through this REF period. Taking more than half his research effort in this REF period, it combines publication of the Roman military base at Dura-Europos, Syria, a literal quarter of this ‘Pompeii of the East’, with reanalysis of the garrison community occupying it. It rewrites the later history of Dura as a military/civil ‘double city’, contributes to knowledge of Rome’s neglected eastern armies.
