- Martin Constantine wrote this book in response to a problem that he had observed directing young opera singers, namely, their lack of ability to translate ideas into dramatic action. The significance of the book lies in the fact that it addresses the issue noted by the National Opera Studio in 2017 when they reported that a high level of acting was expected of contemporary opera singers. The structure of the book is derived from ENO Opera Works, a training course for young opera singers at English National Opera, which Constantine established and of which he was Director for over ten years. This programme allowed him to test thoroughly all of the ideas explored at length in the text. The book provides not only detailed explication of tools and application of these to practice, but also an extensive number of interviews Constantine conducted with leading practitioners on sub-jects ranging from repertoire to rehearsal strategies.
